Oil Cleanser FAQ

Welcome to The Den’s guide to oil cleansing! Whether you’re new to the method, or want more information before making the switch, you’re in the right place. We understand how confusing it can be at first, so we’ve compiled answers to your most frequently asked questions.

How do I oil cleanse?

This is our most common question in-store, and for good reason—oil cleansing is quite different from what you might be used to! Here’s a simple guide to help you get started:

  1. Start with a dry face (you can leave your makeup on).
  2. Pump a loonie sized amount of our oil cleanser into the palm of your hand. Massage the oil into your skin with gentle pressure for a full 60 seconds. Focus on areas with specific issues (e.g., dryness, acne, etc.).

Tip: Massaging for 1-2 minutes helps encourage lymphatic drainage and blood flow.

  1. Press a clean, warm, and wet washcloth against your face until it cools.
  2. Wipe the cloth across your face and repeat as needed until all of the oil is removed.

How much oil should I use?

Start with about a loonie-sized amount. If you feel it’s not enough while massaging, add a bit more.

How often should I oil cleanse?

As often as you would normally cleanse your face! You can oil cleanse every day or sometimes a couple of times a week is enough. Listen to your skin (do it more often if your skin is feeling congested) and adjust to suit your routine.

How do I know which oil cleanser is best for my skin?

We currently offer two fantastic options:

  • Normal to Sensitive: Contains Sandalwood to nourish, improve elasticity, and even out skin tone. This option is ideal for sensitive or dry skin due to its calming and moisturizing properties.
  • Normal to Oily: Formulated with Tea Tree for its antiseptic and antibacterial benefits, and Frankincense to rejuvenate damaged skin and reduce the appearance of scars. Perfect for oily skin!

What if I have oily skin?

All skin types can oil cleanse! This method works with your skin’s natural oils to thoroughly cleanse; removing makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and excess oil. While it may seem counterintuitive, oil cleansing can actually reduce oily shine and prevent dehydration, helping to achieve glowing, breakout-free skin!

Is there an adjustment phase when switching to oil cleansers?

Your skin may need a week or two to adjust, so give it some time. Try not to alternate between oil cleansing and traditional cleansers that contain sulphates or sulphides, as this can confuse your skin and lead to excess oil production.

Should I still use moisturizers and/or serums after oil cleansing?

You likely won’t need to moisturize, or you’ll need less than you used to. You can apply any additional products you prefer – serum, moisturizer, gel, SPF, etc. – or nothing at all if your skin feels happy.

We recommend either our Balance & Hydrate, or Deep Repair serum.

Will it make me break out?

We understand concerns about using cleansing oil on oily, acne prone skin. However, our oil cleansers are formulated to dissolve impurities without clogging pores.

Do I need to wash my face first?

Nope! You can rinse your face with warm water if you have makeup on, but you want to start the oil cleansing process with a dry face for best results.

Oil cleansers are a simple yet effective way to achieve clear, hydrated skin. Give it a little time, and you’ll soon see the difference. Happy cleansing!
