On July 23rd, we had the extraordinary pleasure of spending an evening on the water with Stevie Dennis, the visionary founder and owner of Naas Foods. A passionate advocate for sustainable food practices, Stevie guided us through the fascinating world of kelp harvesting. We’re thrilled to share this adventure with you and why we’re so proud to carry Naas Kelp Flakes in our shop!
Who is Naas Foods?
Naas Foods operates with a clear mission: to create food products and community connections that embody Indigenous values, quality, environmental integrity, sustainability, and innovation. Stevie, an Ahousaht member of the Keltsmaht First Nation, is dedicated to our broad coastal community and sustainable practices, with his efforts grounded in a deep respect for the land and sea.
A Journey in Sustainable Kelp Harvesting
Our adventure began down at the Tofino Resort Marina docks, as we (oh so gracefully) clambered onto Stevie’s crabbing boat. “You can trust me!” he joked as we took our seats. Raised by a family of fishers, and eventually buying a boat before a car (at 15 years old), Stevie is definitely the one to trust at your side on the water.
And we’re off! As we left the Tofino harbour, Stevie pointed out the boundary between Ahousaht and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations territories [imagine a line from the Tofino harbour cutting between Meares and Vargas Islands (ish)]. While offering us a lesson in the region’s rich history, he shared how Naas encourages sustainable kelp harvesting within the Ahousaht territory of Clayoquot Sound.
Understanding Kelp Harvest
Passing Lone Cone, Stevie had us pull off to a rock where a patch of bull kelp was floating. There are two main methods to kelp harvesting, he explained, and had us pull on one of the bulbs. It easily popped off from its stronghold and fell into the boat. While this is not a harvesting technique used at Naas, it was helpful for understanding kelp anatomy. Naas Foods employs a more sustainable method by cutting only the blades of the kelp, leaving about twelve inches attached to the bulb. This practice ensures the kelp can regrow and provide a continuous supply for their delicious kelp flakes.
Just a bit further down the inlet, we reached Naas’ 40-hectare kelp farm—what Stevie affectionately calls their “kelp ranch.” This farm is not only a source of high-quality kelp but also a model of environmental stewardship. By cultivating giant and bull kelp, Naas actively contributes to marine ecosystem restoration and combats climate change through carbon sequestration. Their farm is designed to blend seamlessly with the marine environment, fostering a relationship that benefits both kelp and the surrounding marine life. During our visit, we even encountered a group of about 100 otters helping keep sea urchins off the kelp. Talk about symbiotic relationships!
The Kelp Harvesting Process
Kelp harvesting is no easy task. It requires a dedicated team to pull thousands of pounds of kelp from the water—often in challenging weather conditions. Each season, Naas hires a team of skilled kelp harvesters, emphasizing that the job is physically demanding but highly rewarding.
Stevie is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience in kelp cultivation. When asked if he is open to sharing his knowledge with others, he remarked, “We can’t just watch our neighbors fail,” underscoring his commitment to education and collaboration in the kelp harvesting industry.
