Original hand painted, mixed media paintings by Tiffany Marie Gagnon.
I began painting in an attempt to pull myself through a second round of Postpartum Depression after the birth of my son, Henry Oak. My usual practices of writing, movement, + meditation seemed more to serve in keeping me stagnant, + so I took to something new hoping art would offer me an alternate way to look at + articulate what pregnancy + new motherhood were revealing to myself. My first series came from choosing especially poignant moments from a journal I kept to my son through his gestation + earliest months alive, + attempting to translate them through paint. They were messy + honest + liberating. From sharing this choreography, I was asked by other mamas to create similarly for them, + have since made art of friends, families, + new persons' intimate stories of birth, death, change, + love. Since, things have been less messy -- both my style + heart have refined + found a place of sweet peace + new expression. Thank you for being a part of that process.
